Heidi has mentioned several times that she wants to get wind chimes for our porch. What better place to look for wind chimes than downtown Madison, Indiana? And look for wind chimes is exactly what we did while
we were there for a wedding last weekend. Here is the model she chose. I like it because it won't obnoxiously make noise under the slightest breeze.

While strolling down Main St, We walked by
The Birdhouse (their web page seems to be lacking in competence but I put the link in just in case they get their stuff together), and the both of us immediately thought that if there was any place in this town that would have wind chimes, this would be the place. Oh, they had wind chimes...and so much more.
For starters, they had a store cat which is always nice. As the name suggests, they also had a variety of "bird stuff" and other back yard nature fodder. We quickly found the wind chime area and Heidi began her hunt for the perfect one.
As she shopped, I continued looking around. As I reached the back of the store, I saw an interesting sign: "Nature Trail." At first, I thought it was another piece of decor for sale. Then, I noticed an arrow pointing to an open door leading into the basement and a sign asking for children to be accompanied by an adult. I thought I'd better have a closer look at this. I let Heidi know (intriguing her as well) and headed down.

This informational sign mentions man mad water!

After educating myself on Backyard Wildlife Habitat, I continued down into the
basement to walk the
nature trail. I didn't spend much time reading the educational material around the basement...er...nature trail, but I was pretty impressed with the amount of time and resources that must have been spent creating a quaint little nature walk in the basement of a store located less than five miles from a state park.

As the trail winds in a simple loop filling the entire basement, all around you are digital reproductions of what is most likely sounds of Indiana "back yard" wildlife. Everywhere you look there are hundreds of ideas on how to decorate your back yard (or basement). Nature, however, isn't always as relaxing as plaster rocks and bird song CDs...

Turning the corner at the back of the nature trail...er...basement, I saw a frightful sight! A hole in the foundation of the west wall was emanating an eerie red glow, and lo! Through the crimson blaze, there appeared a figure that sent shivers down my spine and continues to haunt my dreams to this very day. The rare Indiana Giant Tarantula! This elusive and reclusive species makes its home in the walls of basements all across the Hoosier state. If you don't eat your vegetables, it comes and steals you away in your sleep!
There was also an area with bats and strobe lights. I did not take a picture of this.
